Digital twin for electricity distribution networks

From Grid Digitalization to Predictive and Resilient Network Management

The energy transition is fundamentally reshaping the role of electricity distribution networks. The rapid growth of renewable energy sources, electrification of demand, electric mobility, and distributed energy resources is increasing the complexity of network operation and planning while creating new challenges for utilities. In this evolving landscape, digitalization has become a key enabler for ensuring grid efficiency, reliability, and resilience.

Among the emerging technologies supporting this transformation, the Digital Twin is gaining significant attention. A Digital Twin is a dynamic digital replica of the electrical network that integrates information from monitoring systems, sensors, smart meters, GIS platforms, and operational systems to provide a real-time representation of grid conditions. By combining advanced modelling, simulation, and predictive analytics, it allows operators to understand network behaviour, anticipate potential issues, and evaluate different operational scenarios before they occur. In practice, Digital Twins are often implemented as a federation of interconnected models, each supporting specific operational, planning, asset management, or forecasting use cases, rather than as a single monolithic representation of the entire network.

The objective is not simply to create a virtual copy of the grid but to develop a decision-support tool capable of improving the entire asset lifecycle. Through enhanced integration of data and analytical models, utilities can optimize investment planning, improve operational efficiency, increase hosting capacity for new connections, and implement more effective predictive maintenance strategies.

The benefits are particularly relevant in a context characterized by growing penetration of distributed generation, energy storage systems, and new electrical loads. A continuously updated digital representation of the network enables more accurate assessment of grid capacity, supports connection planning, and helps identify potential bottlenecks before they impact operations. It also strengthens system resilience by allowing operators to simulate and assess the impact of extreme climate-related events, such as storms, heatwaves, floods, and wildfires, and evaluate mitigation and recovery strategies in advance.

At the European level, Digital Twins are increasingly recognized as a strategic component of the future energy system. The TwinEU project is developing a federated Digital Twin concept for the European electricity system, based on the integration of local digital twins developed by network operators and other stakeholders. The initiative aims to improve grid planning, enhance TSO–DSO cooperation, facilitate data exchange, and support the development of interoperable solutions for future power systems. This approach further confirms that the future evolution of Digital Twins will rely on interoperable and interconnected digital ecosystems rather than stand-alone models.

The journey towards Digital Twins does not represent a break with current innovation programs but rather their natural evolution. Technologies such as IoT, artificial intelligence, digital substations, advanced monitoring systems, and data management platforms are progressively converging into integrated solutions capable of transforming operational data into actionable insights.

In the coming years, Digital Twins are expected to become a key enabler for achieving decarbonization and electrification targets while ensuring a secure and reliable electricity supply. More than a technological innovation, they represent a new paradigm for grid management based on observability, controllability, predictability, and resilience. Their ability to support both daily operations and long-term adaptation to evolving network and climate challenges makes them a strategic asset for the future of electricity distribution systems.
